Most are classic designs from the revolutionary period between the development of the brass cartridge and the second world war. Most of these would fulfill some misplaced nostalgia for an era I only know through literary interpretations and grainy black and white images. Why did the guns fade away? These guns were among the last of an era. The smiths at Colt had a lot of man hours in the finish work on their double-action revolvers.
The machines that produced them were run by humans, and not by computers. And these are material-rich firearms. There is a lot of steel these old guns, which adds to the expense and the weight. So the question is this: if the expense of producing the Colt Python was too much, how is Smith pulling it off with the ? And what, besides the wide gap in prices, is the difference between these two guns? The old Python is blued. The is stainless. The grips are the other major variation.
The Smith has a black rubber grip that keeps the backstrap covered. The finger swells and recurve of the back make it ideal for those who like a custom molded grip.
And the rubber is easy to hold onto. It closes some of the gap behind the trigger guard, but leaves the steel of the backstrap against your palm. This is an Apples-to-Apples comparison. The weights are equal. Both have solid triggers. They share the same grip angle. Model: Plus Caliber:. Model: Python Caliber:. The is my go-to wheel gun. However, earlier this year they caught my attention with a new model: The King Cobra Target.
Like the previous 2 King Cobra models, this one is chambered in Magnum. Personally, I love target-grade firearms of any type, but especially revolvers. I ordered one from Colt and it took a while for me to get it and when I received it, I understood the reasoning.Idol school ep 1
The naming convention does cause some concern as parts between this and the King Cobras from the last century will not interchange.
A longer barrel would definitely throw off the balance of the revolver. The frame and barrel are forged from stainless steel.Reiki laws by state
Fit and finish was nothing short of excellent and the Altamont grips were beautiful. The trigger was extremely smooth and broke at 8. I tested the Colt King Cobra Target at 25 yards 75 feet with an assortment of 38 special and Magnum ammunition.
These are very mild target loads that average fps. These bullets left the bore at fps and while recoil was not unpleasant, you knew that you were not shooting a The average group size was 2. I was actually a bit surprised that the Federal performed so well, but that is what the revolver was rated to handle.
I would caution against a steady diet of Magnum in a revolver of this size.
Colt King Cobra: Revolver Test and Review
I have been shooting, collecting and tinkering with Colt revolvers for a very long time. In my experience, their excellent lock work is prone to shooting out of time earlier than other revolver brands and a steady diet of hot loads will only accelerate that. I own and shoot a lot of target revolvers, but I do not know if I would put the King Cobra Target in that category. If features like the sights and those grips are what make it a target pistol on some level and the bbl.
Very few people would feel outgunned with this revolver as a sidearm. The Colt Python is a. It is sometimes referred to as a "combat magnum".Garmin panoptix livescope mounting pole

Pythons have a reputation for accuracy, smooth trigger pull, and a tight cylinder lock-up. The Colt Python was first introduced in as Colt's top-of-the-line model and was originally intended to be a large-frame.
Pythons have a distinct appearance due to a full barrel underlug, ventilated rib and adjustable sights. When the revolver is at full cock, just as the trigger is pressed, the cylinder locks up for the duration of the hammer strike. Other revolvers have a hint of looseness even at full-cock. The gap between the cylinder and forcing cone is very tight, further aiding accuracy and velocity. In OctoberColt announced that it would cease production of Python revolvers.
In a follow-up letter to distributors, the company cited changing market conditions and the costs of defending lawsuits as the reasons to discontinue the Python line, as well as a number of other models.
The Colt Python was officially re-released by Colt in Januaryfollowing months of circulating rumors. The new Python is built out of stronger stainless steel than the originals, and is available in 4. The Python was originally available in two finishes: royal blue and bright nickel. The bright nickel model was discontinued with the introduction of the more durable satin stainless and mirror-polished Ultimate Stainless models. Pythons were available with 2. Today, the new King Cobra only offers an integral rear notch. This approach packs lots of power into a handy package. And like the Cobra, the new King Cobra uses a leaf mainspring design. At the top, the barrel is milled flat.
The cylinder rotates clockwise in the distinctive Colt style. Some of the parts, including the trigger and hammer, are made from stainless steel metal injection molded MIM manufacturing. The rubber overmolded Hogue grip completes the utilitarian appearance and provides a secure purchase. The qualities of this grip are fully realized at the range. Both of these aspects of the King Cobra hit the mark.
The 0. I am a big fan of the bead. The trigger is narrower than most revolver triggers, and its face is not serrated or textured. The pull is very smooth and breaks crisply without a hint of creep or grit. The King Cobra proved to be practically accurate and reliable.
Most importantly, the factory fixed sights were correctly regulated. Speer's grain Gold Dot load for the. Recoil was surprisingly tolerable. Though the. Revolver accuracy can often be a matter of dimensions. As the bullet passes through the cylinder throat and the forcing cone to the bore, the internal diameter must decrease rather than increase for rifling to maintain a proper grip on the projectile.
The King Cobra was correctly dimensioned with throats measuring. To the contrary, Colt has produced a quality piece packed with well executed and useful features. With revolvers making a comeback, so has Colt. Chambered in 7.

Happy to see Colt finally getting their heads out of their behinds and releasing new revolvers. I picked up a Cobra in and love it. They only made of them. Doubtful that the internal hand-fitting and finish are the same- one of the issues that killed the Python back when. I bought a King Cobra. An excellent piece of equipment and worked flawlessly. Speaks well for the King Cobra. I owned a Python back in the 70s, and as a firearms instructor and weapons officer, I put a lot of rounds downrange; around per week.
I had heard rumors that the Python could not stand up to this much usage, but decided to try anyway, as I really enjoyed the action and the accuracy of my Python. However, I soon discovered the truth of the matter and found that as the timing worsened, the accuracy suffered as well.
Inwe were thinking of leaving the Old Dominion and moving to Pa. As we entered the new store, I noticed a King Cobra, in the showcase. I stopped and asked the salesman if I could see the gun. Other then the barrel profile and use of stainless, the gun is the same as the Mark V. Colt named the new model the King Cobra, continuing it's use of snake named revolvers.
As a first for Colt, a Cobra head was part of the barrel stamp breaking with the tradition of having only the name and caliber stamped on the barrel. The King Cobra was a first in the gun business, in that it was the first time a new model of revolver was introduced in stainless steel before a blued version. Finishes were satin stainless steel, bright polish stainless, and bright blue.
Grips were Pachmayr "Gripper" with gold Colt medallions, Vintage Industry copies of the Pachmayer Gripper made for Colt with silver medallions, and checkered walnut with gold medallions.

It means a strong desire to live, taking the form of readiness to die. The feel of the trigger is quite different.
If you want a Colt, to shoot, there is nothing wrong with the King Cobra. IF you want a Collectors Item to look at and maybe shoot now and again, it's hard to be the Python.Product recalls 2020
These are two totally different design guns. The Python was a semi-custom, hand built revolver noted as having the best accuracy of all the American double actions.
More time was spent fitting and tuning the action then any other revolver made in America. Its noted as having the best single action trigger of them all, and the bluing or bright stainless polish was the best ever done on an American revolver. The Python has the old 's Colt action with two hammer blocking safety systems. The Python frame and cylinder were very strong, but the old Colt design action won't take abuse and continue to work properly.
Like an expensive sports car, it has to be treated properly, but in return you get performance above other brands or models. The Python is in a class all its own. The King Cobra is a "machine fitted" revolver that was assembled by selecting parts from a bin until one fit properly. Accuracy is excellent but not up to Python standards. The King Cobra has a modern transfer bar safety and ignition system.
The King Cobra was about a step above every other brand in quality. Remove Advertisements. Mine is a 6" and the trigger pull in single action is scarry light from the factory.Apex crashes in nvwgf2umx
And it is a collector's piece now. I would definately buy that 4" that you have seen for sell. I had a 4" blue Python that I could trigger cock. Foolishly sold it for a because I'm left-handed and it was a carry gun. If you have the chance to pull the trigger on a Python you will immediately feel the difference! Also if you compare them side by side you can tell finish, assembly, etc but it is not as rugged as other revolvers I would buy it. They had a full underlug but as been noted were cheaper and of a different design than the Python.
I keep my eye out for them, and also for Anacondas. After oggling it for several months I just bought it.
